Ethereum Foundation researchers and community discuss the 'endgame' of Ethereum, involving scaling, L1 revenue, and native Rollup

According to The Block, core researchers from the Ethereum Foundation participated in an "AMA" (Ask Me Anything) event on the well-known forum Reddit, answering questions about scaling, Layer 1 revenue, and security, including the upcoming Pectra upgrade.

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake stated that the first phase of Pectra's two-stage upgrade is expected to begin "in the coming months". Currently, developers are conducting Pectra upgrade testing on the Holesky testnet, and the main network upgrade time depends on the testing progress.

In recent years, the influence of the Ethereum mainnet seems to have been weakened by Layer 2 solutions aimed at expanding the memory blockchain. Core researchers, including founder Vitalik Buterin, hope to improve Ethereum's economic model by reclaiming the revenue earned from Layer 2 and promoting 'native Rollups'.

Buterin responded to questions about the possibility of Ethereum being "taken over by enterprises" by saying:

Our goal is the neutrality of Ethereum, not the neutrality of the Ethereum Foundation - usually the two are aligned, but sometimes there can be disagreements, and when that happens, we should choose the former. The major risks I currently see are at the L2 and wallet levels, as well as staking and custody service providers. Recently, the foundation has begun to intervene in the development of the first two areas and promote the adoption of interoperability standards

Blob、 Data availability and revenue

It is worth noting that the Pectra upgrade will increase the number of "Blob" transactions per memory block from 3 to 6. Drake stated that this will lower the Blob fee market, which is currently one of the ways in which the value of the Ethereum network and Ethereum (ETH) as a commodity accumulates. The Blob introduced in the Dencun upgrade can temporarily store transaction data to reduce the cost of Layer 2 submitting data to the main chain.

Drake Another researcher, Dankrad Feist, believes that the Ethereum base layer should expand its native 'Data Availability', but they do not believe that alternative solutions such as the staking platform EigenLayer will pose too much threat to Ethereum. This is partly because as the entire ecosystem grows, different forms of data availability solutions, from Blobs to EigenDA, will usher in more development opportunities. Feist said, "We should make full use of the opportunities where we can ultimately charge fees

Drake He also shares the same feeling, pointing out that in the long run, the demand for data availability may exceed the supply, especially "humans can always find innovative ways to consume more bandwidth". He optimistically expressed:

In about 10 years, I expect Ethereum to settle 10 million TPS (equivalent to 100 transactions per person per day), which can generate $1 billion in daily revenue even if the cost of each transaction is only $0.001

In addition, he believes that future expansion plans, such as danksharding, will ensure the sustained revenue of Layer 1 while balancing data availability (DA) supply and demand.

The 'endgame' of Ethereum

Although there are still multiple possible paths for the future expansion of Ethereum, researchers at the Ethereum Foundation now feel more at ease exploring its ultimate form.

Ideally, we can distinguish between the parts that can be fixed and those that require continuous evolution, "Buterin said." I think many of these technical problems have seen 'light at the end of the tunnel,' because the pace of research is indeed slower than five years ago, and the recent focus is more on incremental improvement

When it comes to the topic of 'native Rollup', the main researcher in this field, Drake, said:

The discussion around native Rollup is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, based on my experience, it is very easy to promote the concept of native Rollup to EVM equivalent Rollups. If a Rollup has the opportunity to become native, why not? This is an absolute improvement and is provided almost free of charge by L1

Drake also pointed out that leading Rollup platforms including Arbitrarum, Base, Optimism, and Scroll have expressed interest in becoming native Rollup.

Nevertheless, Ansgar Dietrichs, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, pointed out that Ethereum's roadmap centered around Rollup over the years has spurred numerous technological innovations, and competition from different teams has driven research in areas such as zero knowledge proof (ZKP) and interoperability. Dietrich states:

Looking back, I am quite certain that if we had relied solely on our own efforts, we would not have made such significant progress in such a short period of time. The parallel exploration of the design space by multiple teams has brought tremendous benefits. When we focus on the (indeed existing!) challenges brought by this approach, it is easy to overlook them (such as issues surrounding interoperability and UX fragmentation)
